Speakers speaking the Charlton College of Business Class of 2016 Friday morning, during the first in a series of commencement exercises at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth — the university’s 116th — this weekend, chose to defy conventional wisdom.

Peyton R. “Randy” Helm told graduates, “Don’t follow your dreams.”

Student speaker Tayla Vincent, of East Providence, Rhode Island, steered away from wishing her fellow graduates “good luck.”
